The city of New York is down a chief digital officer following the sudden departure of Sree Sreenivasan.
According to the mayor’s office, the change comes as part of a larger reorganization meant to bring the digital strategy under the umbrella of the recently appointed Chief Technology Officer Miguel Gamiño.
“We’re proud of the work we’ve done together to strengthen NYC’s tech ecosystem, and we wish Sree all the best. Moving forward, it was a natural fit to centralize Digital Strategy under the Chief Technology Officer (CTO), Miguel Gamiño, and we’re excited about the incredible progress that will continue,” Deputy Press Secretary Ben Serle told Government Technology via email.
The CDO was appointed to the post by Mayor Bill de Blasio in August 2016, after serving as the CDO for the Metropolitan Museum of Art for nearly three years.
When New York City unveiled plans in February for the Union Square Tech Hub, Sreenivasan told Government Technology at the time that it sends “another clear signal to the tech community across the country and around the world that New York City is committed to the next generation of digital and technology innovation. Come build here, grow here, thrive here."
Prior to his work with the city of New York, Sreenivasan served as the chief digital officer for Columbia University. He replaced former CDO Minerva Tantoco in July 2016, when she departed public service for a role in the private sector. Sreenivasan’s last day with the de Blasio administration was May 12.
